Height & Electrical Safety - Industrial Tech Opportunity at ILCC!

The Connect @ Iowa Lakes program is designated to help area students with more hands-on workplace learning experiences.  They are hosting a day for students interested in a height/electrical careers to learn more about height or electrical safety in a fun hands-on experience.  This event will coincide with the SERTech Event at Iowa Lakes which is brining area technicians together to attain necessary certifications for their jobs.  After the learning event, students will be served a FREE LUNCH while listening to a renowned speaker in the safety industry, Richard Hawk.   Attendees will also receive a FREE SERTech Event T-shirt! Mini Medical School Program!

The University of Iowa Carver School of Medicine would like you to join them in an educational community program, Discoveries in Modern Medicine: Hypertension & Preeclampsia, in Spencer, Iowa at the Spencer Community Theatre on March 10th!

The program will provide students interested in pursuing fields in science and medicine the opportunity to connect STEM education with breakthroughs in medicine. They are encouraging students to attend early for an interaction pre-program session to experience hands-on learning and get a glimpse at medical school training.

Mini medical school is designed for adults, or anyone 15 years or older, who are curious about current issues in medicine and science. The program is offered FREE of charge and will include refreshments. Registration is required at www.medicine.uiowa.edu/minimedicalschool

Coding Course Opportunity!

Minnesota West Community & Technical College has received funding from the AT&T Foundation for high school students grades 9-12 to participate in a 2 credit Concepts of Coding class. Interested students must fill out the application and return toRoxanne Hayenga, 1450 Collegeway, Worthington MN 56187 or email roxanne.hayenga@mnwest.edu before March 1, 2015.

Students are required to come to the Worthington campus on Saturday, May 30, 2015 for an orientation session. The rest of the class can be accessed online. This course will encourage students to communicate, from a distance, with instructor, mentor, tutors and peers as part of the class team; will help students learn the fundamentals of programming logic; will have the students interacting with the JavaScript language in a friendly, game-like, coding environment; will help students observe immediate interactive results; and will encourage students to trouble shoot and correct inaccurate results.

The mission of the 3D Printing SummerCamp is to provide students with the toolsto bring design ideas to life. Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student Award

What is the Hoover Uncommon Student Award?

The program identifies and recognizes approximately 15 Iowa high school juniors who propose and then accomplish projects of their own design. The program encourages young Iowans to invest their talents and energies in their schools, communities and beyond; promoting personal growth, maturity and self-confidence while making a difference in people's lives. The program is shaped to attract students who are gifted as hard workers. Applicants' grades, test scores or financial need are not the basis of judges' decision. 

How does the program work? 

In the spring, you can submit a project proposal and two letters of recommendation. Approximately 15 finalists are selected based on the ambitious nature of the stated project goal and detailed plans to reach that goal. Students work on their projects during the summer months.

Finalists are required to spend a weekend at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library-Museum in West Branch to meet each other and learn more about Herbert Hoover and the program that carries his name.

Finalists are required to return to West Branch to give oral presentations about their projects to a selection committee and audience members. All finalists receive a $1,000 award at that time. In addition, three are chosen to receive $5,000 scholarships for study at an accredited two- or four-year college or university anywhere in the country. 

What kind of projects are proposed? 

• Projects that utilize the student's personal gifts and passions.
• Projects that benefit others.
• Projects that relate or exemplify Herbert Hoover's life and career based on his humanitarian work, his skills as an engineer, his passion for conservation, his love of technology and his entrepreneurial spirit

2015 College Prep Scholarship Opportunity

A program for academically motivated low-income high school juniors. 

QuestBridge National College Match program connects high-achieving low-income seniors with full, four-year scholarships to the nation's best colleges and universities. This scholarship is specifically designed to give talented 11th grades the preparation they need to not only get into top college, but attend for free or with generous financial aid. 

• Who is a College Prep Scholar? A high school junior, typically with an unweighted GPA of 3.5 or above in challenging courses, who comes from a family earning less than $60,000 annually and may be on free or reduced-price lunch.
• What can College Prep Scholars get? Full scholarships to college summer programs, free standardized test prep, personalized college essay review workshops, nominations for all-expense-paid campus visits and fly-in programs, a head start on the National College Match application, priority access to QuestBridge application support, plus more!
