Business Horizons 2017

​What: An action-packed week of competitions, challenges and fun for 100+ high school students from across the state. Students gain real-world experience and develop their personal and professional skills as young leaders while setting goals for a successful future. 
When: Sunday, June 25 (1pm) - Thursday, June 29th (6pm)
Who: Any current high school students (grade 9-12 during the 2016-17 school year)
Where: Central College (Pella, Iowa)
What's in it for you?

Summer 2017 Career Prep Program

  • Planning on working this summer?
  • Do you want to earn money all while earning a SLHS vocational credit?
SUMMER CAREER PREPARATION PROGRAM
June 5-July 14, 2017
You Earn:
  • SLHS Vocational Credit
  • Possible College Credit
  • MONEY to pay for today’s extras & tomorrow’s education
You Acquire
  • ​Skills to help plan for future education
  • Skills needed in a future career
  • Job Experience that looks good on a resume
  • Job Experience that looks good on a college application
The Summer Career Prep Program (SCPP) details: 
  • Students must be 16 or older
  • Opportunity to work in an area you may be interested in as a future career
  • Opportunity to use existing summer job
  • Keep a journal and time log
  • Must be able to provide your own transportation


SCPP applications are available in the high school office! Deadline to turn them into Mrs.Nelson is April 7th! Let me know if you have more questions!

TRIO services and resources now available to SLHS!


Iowa Lakes Community College TRIO Talent Search Program has been established for quite some time in area schools, such as: Algona, Bishop Garrigan, Emmetsburg Catholic, Emmetsburg Public, Estherville Lincoln Central, North Union, Graettinger Terril, Ruthven Ayrshire, Okoboji, Sacred Heart, Spencer and West Bend-Mallard and is NOW serving Spirit Lake!!!

TRIO is for students in grades 6-12 who 1) neither parent has graduated from a 4-year college OR 2) meets very liberal TAXABLE income guidelines OR 3) Both!

TRIO allows for new friendships to be formed, great experiences to be had and a chance to grow both academically and personally. Some FREE activities offered include:
  • In-school advising sessions: great information and tips on test taking, note taking, self-esteem, scholarship opportunities, ACT prep, financial aid, colleges, careers and more!
  • Campus visits to great colleges and universities
  • Fun educational trips
  • Help with homework
  • Summer bus trips: 8th-11th grade students visit college and university campuses in new places

Faust Institute of Cosmetology invites you to attend their Career Event on Wednesday, December 14th from 1-3pm.
