Welding Training and Employment Opportunity!

Sabre Industries and Western Iowa Tech Community College (WITCC) have partnered to offer a paid training program for welders. 

The training program includes 13 weeks of formal classroom, laboratory courses and on the job training. As a trainee, you will be a full-time employee of Sabre Industries and be eligible for benefits. After completing the training and passing the necessary requirements, you will receive a college certificate. There is a 12-month commitment to Sabre Industries upon completing the program.

Summer Institute for High Altitude Ballooining

Ok, this looks pretty cool!

Many of us dream of exploring space but there are only a few ways for a student to do so. Amateur astronomy and rocketry are two common ways, but neither can match the sheer awe of building and launching a private spacecraft. Although it is difficult to get into deep space, near space is within our grasp. High altitude balloons are unmanned balloons, usually filled with helium or hydrogen, that are released into the stratosphere, generally reaching between 60,000 to 120,000 feet before they burst and their payload is returned to earth by parachute. The most common application of these balloons is to study weather, but they are becoming increasingly popular with both amateurs and professionals as a platform for other kinds of experiments in the upper atmosphere.Not only is high altitude ballooning a great way to introduce the electronics and programming skills needed to collect and analyze data from the spacecraft, it provides a fun way to explore scientific concepts from pressure, temperature and volume to cosmic radiation.

Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN is offering a High Altitude Ballooning Camp for students entering their freshmen-senior years from June 25-30th, 2017. Students who attend this camp will gain valuable hands-on experience with electronics, programming microcomputers to collect data from a variety of sensors, building payloads, using a variety of cameras, planning flight paths, and flying balloons.

2017 Tippie Gateway Summer Program

I am contacting you with information about the Tippie Gateway Program, a six day FREE residential program for students interested in studying business at University of Iowa.

The Tippie Gateway Program is intended for current high school juniors. Preference will be given to applicants from populations under-represented in business including minority, low-income, and/or first-generation. The only cost for participants is their travel to and from campus.

Program highlights:

• Six-day, residential program: Sunday June 25 through Friday June 30, 2017
• No cost to the students; housing, meals, and other expense are covered by scholarships
• Learn about the various business majors: Finance, Marketing, Economics, etc. 
• Interactive workshops focused on their strengths as students and leaders
• Participate in a case study competition
• Interact with students, faculty, staff and alumni of the Tippie College of Business

Iowa Lakes Community College TRIO Talent Search Program has been established for quite some time in area schools, such as: Algona, Bishop Garrigan, Emmetsburg Catholic, Emmetsburg Public, Estherville Lincoln Central, North Union, Graettinger Terril, Ruthven Ayrshire, Okoboji, Sacred Heart, Spencer and West Bend-Mallard and is NOW serving Spirit Lake!!!

TRIO is for students in grades 6-12 who 1) neither parent has graduated from a 4-year college OR 2) meets very liberal TAXABLE income guidelines OR 3) Both!

2017 Drake Physics Prize

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Drake University has launches the 2017 Drake Physics Prize Examination, offering a scholarship opportunity to encourage interest in physics, astronomy and physical sciences.

1st place - an unrestricted four-year, full-tuition scholarship to Drake University, a personal trophy and the Drake Physics Trophy 
2nd place - personal trophy
3rd place - personal trophy
Honorable mention - certificate of achievement (awarded to the next 25 placers)
Top 50 seniors - an invitation to apply for a second four-year, full-tuition scholarship, restricted to physics or astronomy majors.

The examination is open to any student enrolled in a high school in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska and some select areas in Illinois. It will cover topics in physics that would normally be studied by students during the first semester of their high school physics course: kinematics, dynamics, circular motion, universal law of momentum and collisions, work, energy and conversation of energy, torque, rotational kinematics, dynamics and energy, angular momentum conservation, mechanical waves and sound. The principal of each participating school is asked to supervise the objective-type examination, which should be done at the school at a specified time between Wednesday, February 1st and Friday, February 3rd, 2017.

The test will be administered on the internet. The exam is given in two parts. Part I is multiple choice with no partial credit. Part II is composed of more complicated multiple-choice problems for which, however, partial credit is given. Students wishing to take the tests should register online by 1:00pm on Monday, January 30th.

The World Food Prize

​Dr. Norman Borlaug, arguably the world's greatest scientist and humanitarian hero, was once an Iowa high school student. As a scientist, Dr. Borlaug developed a disease resistant, hybrid of wheat through innovative and novel scientific techniques. His work would stem the world's largest production of food ever known and lead him to be names the man that saved over a billion lives. As a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and founder of the World Food Prize, Dr.Borlaug's life is a remarkable example of what students can accomplish through scientific and humanitarian efforts. 

That being said, you are invited to the Iowa Youth Institute on April 24th, 2017 at Iowa State University. TO participate, students will need to identify an issue related to food insecurity and propose a recommendation on how to solve this issue within a specified country, using instructions. Students will then share their ideas with a roundtable of peers and experts in the fields of hunger alleviation. Students will also take part in hands-on activities that raise awareness of hunger fighting career paths. 

All students who participate in the Iowa Youth Institute will receive a $500 scholarship to Iowa State University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. This scholarship includes the following majors: genetics, biology, microbiology, dietetics, nutritional science and more!

John Deere TECH Program at NICC

Seniors and Juniors, are being invited to attend a college visit to Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) for the John Deere TECH Program on Thursday, November 17th, on the Calmar Campus.

The day will be spent touring the facility and talking with instructors in the John Deere TECH Program, which is beneficial for students deciding if this is the right career choice for them.

Transportation will be provided, but we must know which students are planning on attending by Monday, November 7th. NICC will contact students with pick-up points and times after they know who is all planning on attending. They will need the following information from interested students:

Calling all Skilled Scholars!

Build Dakota is a new scholarship program for skilled scholars entering high-need workforce programs at South Dakota technical institutes. ​

How does it work? 

• ​Students of any age and from any state are eligible to apply
• The scholarships will support tuition, fees, books and other required program expenses in the eligible technical institute programs
• Recipients of the scholarships will commit to living and working in the state, in their field of study, for three years following graduation
• Applications open January 1st, 2017 and close March 15, 2017.
