2017 Drake Physics Prize

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Drake University has launches the 2017 Drake Physics Prize Examination, offering a scholarship opportunity to encourage interest in physics, astronomy and physical sciences.

1st place - an unrestricted four-year, full-tuition scholarship to Drake University, a personal trophy and the Drake Physics Trophy 
2nd place - personal trophy
3rd place - personal trophy
Honorable mention - certificate of achievement (awarded to the next 25 placers)
Top 50 seniors - an invitation to apply for a second four-year, full-tuition scholarship, restricted to physics or astronomy majors.

The examination is open to any student enrolled in a high school in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska and some select areas in Illinois. It will cover topics in physics that would normally be studied by students during the first semester of their high school physics course: kinematics, dynamics, circular motion, universal law of momentum and collisions, work, energy and conversation of energy, torque, rotational kinematics, dynamics and energy, angular momentum conservation, mechanical waves and sound. The principal of each participating school is asked to supervise the objective-type examination, which should be done at the school at a specified time between Wednesday, February 1st and Friday, February 3rd, 2017.

The test will be administered on the internet. The exam is given in two parts. Part I is multiple choice with no partial credit. Part II is composed of more complicated multiple-choice problems for which, however, partial credit is given. Students wishing to take the tests should register online by 1:00pm on Monday, January 30th.

The World Food Prize

​Dr. Norman Borlaug, arguably the world's greatest scientist and humanitarian hero, was once an Iowa high school student. As a scientist, Dr. Borlaug developed a disease resistant, hybrid of wheat through innovative and novel scientific techniques. His work would stem the world's largest production of food ever known and lead him to be names the man that saved over a billion lives. As a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and founder of the World Food Prize, Dr.Borlaug's life is a remarkable example of what students can accomplish through scientific and humanitarian efforts. 

That being said, you are invited to the Iowa Youth Institute on April 24th, 2017 at Iowa State University. TO participate, students will need to identify an issue related to food insecurity and propose a recommendation on how to solve this issue within a specified country, using instructions. Students will then share their ideas with a roundtable of peers and experts in the fields of hunger alleviation. Students will also take part in hands-on activities that raise awareness of hunger fighting career paths. 

All students who participate in the Iowa Youth Institute will receive a $500 scholarship to Iowa State University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. This scholarship includes the following majors: genetics, biology, microbiology, dietetics, nutritional science and more!

John Deere TECH Program at NICC

Seniors and Juniors, are being invited to attend a college visit to Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) for the John Deere TECH Program on Thursday, November 17th, on the Calmar Campus.

The day will be spent touring the facility and talking with instructors in the John Deere TECH Program, which is beneficial for students deciding if this is the right career choice for them.

Transportation will be provided, but we must know which students are planning on attending by Monday, November 7th. NICC will contact students with pick-up points and times after they know who is all planning on attending. They will need the following information from interested students:

·        DOB (asked for by NICC)
·        Address
There is limited space available,​ only 30 students. Please call or email your information as soon as you're committed to attend, so that they can reserve your seat.

NOTE: Students may drive themselves as long as it is approved by parent/school.  We do ask that they meet up with our group at the campus visit as a dealer sponsor is required to attend this school and we do offer a great scholarship program that we would like to share with students.

Calling all Skilled Scholars!

Build Dakota is a new scholarship program for skilled scholars entering high-need workforce programs at South Dakota technical institutes. 

How does it work? 
  • ​Students of any age and from any state are eligible to apply
  • The scholarships will support tuition, fees, books and other required program expenses in the eligible technical institute programs
  • Recipients of the scholarships will commit to living and working in the state, in their field of study, for three years following graduation
  • Applications open January 1st, 2017 and close March 15, 2017.

Which programs qualify? 
The following high-need fields of study have been approved for the 2017-2018 Build Dakota Scholarship Program.

  • Automotive/Diesel
  • Building Trades/Construction
  • Energy Technicians

ICCC Digital Mass Communications Program - Twitter Chat

On Tuesday, October 11th at 7 p.m., Iowa Central’s Digital Mass Communications (DMC) program will be hosting an online Twitter Chat to discuss the DMC major, the increasing number of job opportunities in social media, public relations, and journalism, and our new MacBook program which is available to all DMC majors in their first semester. All participants in next Tuesday's Twitter Chat will be eligible to win prizes including scholarship money for upcoming semesters.

If you have any interests in pursuing a career in the fields of social media marketing, public relations, and/or journalism, I highly encourage you to attend the Twitter Chat or to check it out!

ISU's Young Women in Business Conference


According to Iowa State's College of Business, A business degree is your ticket to opportunity. Rise to the top of a large company. Start your own business and make it grow. Work for a nonprofit, or a university, or a government. With a business degree, all that and more are possible. But what is it like to be a business major? Or to work in a particular industry? The College of Business at Iowa State University wants to help you find out.

Young Women in Business is a conference especially for females in grades 9 through 12 and their parents, teachers, and counselors.

It's CONSTRUCTION WEEK!!!


Master Builders of Iowa is sponsoring a week-long commitment (Oct.3-7) to raise awareness of the vast opportunities available in the construction industry. 

Why a career in construction?

Participate in Construction Week at SLHS through the various activities:
  • Newsbreak  interviews with local professionals, highlighting the various different occupational options within specific construction areas. 
  • Field trip to Home Resource Center in Spirit Lake on Friday, Oct. 7 at 10:30am. This provides an opportunity to learn more about a local business and network with local professionals.
  • Feature Friday during Common Time on Friday will focus on Architecture and Construction career cluster. Architect at  3D Builders, Shelly Gustin will be our guest speaker.
